Found a nice little easter egg in google maps directions today. I typed in "Redfern to Annandale" and google thought I meant "Annandale, USA". A bit stupid, but there you go.

The good bit was that it actually generated driving directions for me on how to get from Sydney, Australia, to Annandale, VA, USA, including to "Kayaking" legs across the Pacific:

Happiness is contagious!

Another gem from 60second science:
Apparently happiness is catching. Researchers looked at 5000 individuals over 20 years, and found that whenever one person was happy, then their friends were more likely to be happy. This happiness propagation had a noticeable effect up to three degrees of separation away. Awesome, eh? Published 4th December online in the British Medical Journal.

So these three guys walk into a bar...

You'd think the second and third would have seen it.

Magnetic cows

Again from SciAm 60s science (http://www.sciam.com/podcast):
Apparently cows and deer tend to stand or graze facing either magnetic north or south. Light plane pilots: pay attention. This could help you head in the right direction (or exactly the wrong direction ;-)

Girls are good at maths, too!

I'm catching up on podcasts, including Scientific American's 60 Second Science, a daily broadcast only 90 seconds long (60 is science, the other 30 is titles and ads for weird chemistry companies).
Just listened to episode 482 from July last year, saying the July 25th issue of the journal "Science" contains a report that in all demographics, at all levels, women have the same math ability as men. Good to know. Does that mean that men can cry to win arguments now?
